When considering the idea of therapy, many people experience anxiety and apprehension related to a lack of understanding of the therapeutic process or perhaps even because of a previous negative experience in counseling. These types of feelings are understandable with our limited exposure to what counseling really is and who it may benefit. Seeking out a therapist can be a scary and intimidating experience. It is my hope that you will be gentle with yourself in this process.
I believe the majority of our pain stems from our relationships: our relationships to those we are close to, to our work, to the world around us, and most importantly to ourselves. That is why, while we will spend time working through the specific issues that brought you into counseling, we will also take time to explore the ways in which you relate to your world and how that has blocked you from experiencing the freedom you most likely long for. Through this process, the dynamic of therapy will look much different than simply me telling you what to do. Instead, it will be us creating a team, and building a relationship full of the hope, desire and drive necessary to create the space for change to occur. (I believe that some issues may have a physical component. In such cases, medical consultation will be advised.)
